My personal approach when teaching English as a Foreign Language

Every teacher has her/his own tricks and the way a lesson is taught depends on many factors, as every person is totally different from the other, we also have to adapt our lessons to the circumstances. However, most teachers are used to focus on grammar and only on the textbooks when teaching English, and they leave behind all the other skills.

For example, I like teaching with a textbook as a base, but I don’t like to work only with that. I like looking for additional exercises that focus more on what they already know and they have interest in, in order to catch their attention to teach them something new. This is something similar to the scaffolding, as it is based on the previous knowledge of the student. I believe that in a Foreign Language, English in this case, it’s important to make them connect with the subject, my job is to help them to find that motivation in the English Language that makes them realise that it’s interesting, or at least, useful for some reason. And a way to get this is by relating the lessons to situations in the real-life, making the students realise that they can do it. I believe that communication is key in learning a language, so if the students do activities related to situations that happen to them in the every-day life, or talk about topics that they are interested in, I think the students will find it easier to learn a foreign language and they will enjoy it more.
